I think.... Mercantilism is economic system of some countries in a capitalism's creation period. This system could make some countries which had this policy powerful and wealthy by getting trade's money.
I'll write that i found a definition's mercantilism in the course book.
Mercantilism, economic system of the major trading nations during the 16th, 17th, and 18th cent., based on the premise that national wealth and power were best served by increasing exports and collecting precious metals in return. It superseded the medieval feudal organization in Western Eupope, especially in Holland, France, and England.
Fiona Hall’s “Force Field” exhibition at Wellington City Gallery. Works which were exhibited connected with mercantilism.
'Tender', consists of giant vitrines with meticulously crafted birds’ nests made from shredded U.S. dollar bills. Etched into one side of the glass is the serial number from each dollar used in it. On the other side is the bird species that corresponds with the nest. They’re incredibly realistic especially in the exhibition environment where they’re collected into museum style glass cases with each species’ nest labelled with its scientific name on the front of the case, the banknotes’ serial numbers listed on the back.
Hall’s work explores the boundaries between the natural and the man-made with subtlety and humour. Works like 'Leaf Litter' show how the global plantscape has been shaped by human economic “needs”. I’m still bubbling with the thoughts it triggered the morning after.
-How these works related to merchantilism?
That work relate to the concept of Mercantilism is Money.
Tender means a human emotion and currency.
-How merchantilism has continued from the Renaissance?
I will explain that how it has changed since Renaissance.
Since the Renaissance mercantilism has developed. Wealth's symbol changed that how much money who has from object such as gold.
yeah i agree with most of your ideas but can you explain furthur how these works related to merchantilism? and how merchantilism has continued from the Renaissance?

I agree with your explanation of mercantilism and about Hall's 'Tender' but i would like to tell more about the second sculpture 'Leaf Litter' again actual banknotes are employed, but 183 individual leaves. We have three systems colliding - that of botanical illustration, Linnaean and local vernacular classifications, and monetary systems. The work is 12 meters long.I think that her work is attractive and you can see many levels of interpretation about global trade and the whole ephemerality of being.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry i deleted Jonny's comment on my blog by mistake!!!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely agree with what you said. The work leaf litter is rather interesting in they way it is so symbolic, i also like the message it sends by showing how people will shape things the way they want it.
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with your opinion that those works related to Mercantilism is because of them all discrubing the relationship between art and money and both them are valuable works. At that time money is the only standard to judge people's wealth and social status.
ReplyDeleteArt works could be the best documentary to show the chang in the history, and those works can enlighten us to think more about that.
Hey Hyeran, good work on your blog ! I like how you described both of the work that was made by these artists, you really had a good description on what they are, what they are made of and what teach of them represents. I have to agree on your comment "I’m still bubbling with the thoughts it triggered the morning after." I personally do like the 'Leaf Litter' this work is very symbolic and has a lot of meaning behind it, and it I find that it is very interesting to look at! I also liked how you related the concept of mercantilism on to these two works, these artworks consists of mostly money and do very much reflect on mercantilism. Good job Hyeran!
ReplyDeleteAdding to your saying Hyeran, the works discussed above are playing with the materialism and merchantilism of today. Both works attract people's attention by surprisingly using the money as a medium for the art like make something not valuable as birds nests.Ironically consumed money really triggers attention and curiosity out of people. I like it.The idea of "the nature is more important than the money" came across when I saw "Tender".Nature has been the most controversial global issue that whether shall we destroy more nature for the sake of money or not. I hope more people to see this work!
